What shipped

I just tagged maze_solver v0.1.0. It is a ground-up rewrite of the Tkinter app I wrote about on 2024-10-23, at https://kleinpanic.com/blog/maze-solver. It keeps the name and the goal. Everything else is new. The code is at https://github.com/kleinpanic/maze_solver.

The old app generated mazes with Recursive Backtracker and Prim. It solved them with BFS, DFS and A*. It had sliders for rows, columns, dead ends, branching, wall density and seed, and it animated the search. It needed nothing except tkinter.

Its very first commit also included a whole venv and a pile of .pyc files. The next commit cleaned that up. Lesson learned, I hope.

What is new

The rewrite is a maze generation and pathfinding lab. A shared core sits under two front ends, a terminal UI and a static web UI built with Tailwind and Canvas. The core has registries for solvers and generators.

v0.1.0 has 10 solvers and 11 generators. It also ships CI, GitHub Pages and security workflows. The web UI is at https://kleinpanic.github.io/maze_solver/.

The same day it went on to v0.2.20, 25 tags in all. Those added more solvers, among them Lee, Flood Fill, SPFA, wall followers, Tremaux and Pledge, plus a math breakdown panel and a full solver comparison page.

Try the terminal UI

You need Python 3.11 or newer and numpy.

maze_solver tui --rows 21 --cols 41 --seed 2026 --algorithm Dijkstra

To set up the project:

python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
make dev

What is not done

It is not on PyPI. It is an early release.
