What I just shipped
pplx-research 1.0.0 is on PyPI! It is a research CLI built on Perplexity's Sonar API. You give it a question. It figures out what kind of question it is, runs the search and writes up the answer. The code is at https://github.com/kleinpanic/pplx-research.
Modes
There are three modes.
- quick is a fast answer
- deep runs iterative gap analysis, so it looks for what is missing and searches again
- synthesis pulls several perspectives together: academic, news, forums, docs and code
The --auto flag classifies your query and picks for you.
Under the hood
It is a Python package named pplx_research. There are two parts. PerplexitySDK covers the full set of Sonar parameters and falls back to OpenRouter. ResearchEngine does the research. Requests go through a type-safe builder.
Some of the CLI flags:
- --mode and --sources
- --depth from 1 to 5
- --time-range and --site
- --format and --output
Try it
pip install pplx-research
export PERPLEXITY_API_KEY=...
pplx-research "React vs Vue performance" --auto
You need your own Perplexity API key.
What is not done
There is no man page yet and no agent integration yet. The README covers everything above.
What is next
Try it on something real and tell me where the answer is wrong. I want to know.
P.S Thanks for reading. Consider subbing to the RSS feed.
